Saúde Psicológica e Bem-estar | Observatório Escolar 28 Executive summary whereas life satisfaction decreases among boys, even when psychological symptoms are reduced. After considering the levels of well-being and life satisfaction among students in the lower and upper education, the socio-demographic characteristics (gender, level of education, and area of residence), and identifying the risk of depression, the results revealed that the majority of adolescents who participated in the study had low well-being (51.1%) but were moderately satisfied with their lives (58.5%), confirming the existence of a correlation between the two variables. On the other hand, we discovered that approximately 20% of the participants were at risk of depression and had low life satisfaction, with over half exhibiting low well-being. Especially in the "aftermath" of the COVID-19 pandemic, the percentage of adolescents at risk for depression should be viewed with concern. In the three assessed dimensions of mental health - well-being, life satisfaction, and depression risk - girls demonstrated less favorable outcomes than boys. The same holds in terms of age. Interventions focusing on the higher risk of developing internalization problems and diminished well-being among older female adolescents would be beneficial. After examining the regions (NUTS II), relevant differences were observed: with participants from Algarve, followed by those from the Center region, presenting more negative psychological health indicators.
