Saúde Psicológica e Bem-estar | Observatório Escolar 24 Executive summary Regarding older students (2nd and 3rd cycle and secondary) Based on compliance with the 24-hour movement recommendations for physical activity, sleep and screen time and their association with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, we demonstrate that compliance with the recommendations is essential for improving the psychological health of children and adolescents. Compliance with at least two of the three recommendations regarding physical activity, sleep, or screen time is associated with reducing psychological symptoms. Sleep plays an important role in this association. Children and adolescents appear to be at a critical age for complying with at least two of the three recommendations regarding physical activity, sleep, and screen time. The analysis of individual and contextual variables associated with the perception of changes in daily life due to the COVID-19 pandemic in students in lower (2nd and 3rd cycles) and upper secondary school revealed a general pattern, regardless of the level of education, young people who perceived deterioration in their life due to the pandemic reported lower levels of life satisfaction and well-being. Young people reported a worsening of their lives due to the pandemic, as well as higher levels of psychological symptoms, increased bullying, and increased anxiety in assessment situations, and this pattern was also independent of their level of education. Regardless of the educational level, young people who perceived a decline in their quality of life due to the pandemic reported spending more time in front of screens. In the case of physical activity and hours of sleep (only in lower and upper secondary school students), those who perceived an improvement in their lives after the pandemic reported more sleep and increased physical activity during the week.
